A great finish for Crossroads College Prep in Atlanta

Crossroads College Prep had its highest finish ever this year at the National Scholastic K-12 Championships, held April 18-20, 2008 in Atlanta, Georgia.  The under-800 team finished in third place, and four players concluded the tournament with 5-2 records.  Alicia Brown finished 16th overall, Walker Frantz-Greene finished 21st, Chris Jent finished 25th, and Flannery Allison tied for 25th.  The rest of the under-800 team included Nick Kurtz, Max Carleton, Justin Davis, Nick Little, Cheree Mills, Diante Lipsey, Nelson Corliss, Abie Kanyuck, Hana Mueller, Sam Jones, Paul Watkins, and Will Tipton.

The under-1200 team finished in 20th place.  Chris Eberhardt, Robin Woehr, Tess Butcher, and Harry Shockley played exceptionally well in this tough division.

We had a fun but warm bus ride to Atlanta.  When not playing chess, students took many opportunities to have fun in "Hotlanta."  We stayed at two (!) excellent hotels, and everyone took the unexpected hotel change in stride.   Some of our older players took a campus visit to Georgia Tech with Howard, visited the World of Coca Cola Museum with Dave Mueller, and sang karaoke at a local diner.

Special thanks to our chaperones, Jodi Granok and Dave Mueller, who helped Howard manage a trip that included a record number of players along with the record finish.

Annual Potluck Dinner and Awards Night

The chess awards potluck will be held on Saturday, May 10 at the home of Patty and Max Carleton, 4009 Utah Street, beginning at 5:30 pm.  Please bring a main dish, salad, or side item to share.  Drinks and cake will be provided.  Patty requests that families RSVP by May 6 so that we can plan for the correct number of people.  Please call Patty at 773-1929, or email Howard at howard@crossroadscollegeprep.org to let us know if you are coming.
